Notes from a Dragon Mom →
Emily Rapp reflects on what it means to parent a child with Tay-Sachs, slated to die by his 3rd birthday. dearbaby: A hard and beautiful thing to read. “Parenting, I’ve come to understand, is about loving my child today. Now. In fact, for any parent, anywhere, that’s all there is.“  ~Emily Rapp Love, M

at the cheese shop
Me: HI! Could I please have 200g of the lactose-free Finnish Munster?
Cheese Dude: Sure. Are you Finnish?
Me: No.
Cheese Dude: Are you lactose-free?
Me: Uhhhmm... err... that's a...I mean, well... um, that's a complicated question.
Cheese Dude stammers but doesn't say anything.
Me: It's just that, um..
Cheese Dude: Are you lactose intolerant?
Me: Yeah! Yes. It hurts my stomach.
[I talk for nearly 10 minutes about lactase-phlorizin hydrolase, the enzyme enabling digestion of lactose.]
Cheese Dude: Right. So, I guess you don't want the cheese sliced? Our machine has been in contact with lactose.
Me: Just the wedge would be fine...
Cheese Dude: Great
Me: Thanks.

Kafka On The Shore by Haruki Murakami
HA, KITTAN. fuckyeahexistentialism: “You’ve got to look at it this way: this is war. You’re a soldier, and you have to make a decision. Either I kill the cats or you kill me. One or the other. You need to make a choice right here and now. This might seem an outrageous choice, but consider this: most choices we make in life are equally outrageous.” Johnnie Walker to Nakata (via Submitted...

Good focus
20yardsoflinen: megasloth: The disconnect between this headline and the event, at least in simple human terms, makes me queazy (and hateful): Apple faces iPad production loss of 500,000 after factory explosion in China. Only three dead and — at least — 15 injured, supposedly. Sheesh…. So it looks like the transition from the Toronto Star to the Vancouver Sun will be jarring. What...
